at the book.

A book can show you what to change. A busy week can still leave you putting it off, forgetting a swap, or standing in the shop unsure what to buy.

So I’ve included three print-and-use bonuses to help you turn the reading into real changes this weekend.

Print it. Pin it. Check it off.

You were sold the problem and the solution by the same industry. Here's how to buy your way out — once.

The nonstick pan coating your eggs in PFAS. The "fresh linen" plug-in fogging the room with VOCs. The plastic tub leaching phthalates into last night's leftovers.

Once I saw what was really inside the most ordinary things in my house, I couldn't unsee it. So, one shelf at a time, I cleared them out — and went back to the cheap, old-fashioned things Scandinavians have trusted for generations. Cast iron. Glass. Vinegar. An open window.

This is the whole list, written down: 70 swaps, room by room — the exact thing to throw out, the exact thing to use instead, and where to buy it for next to nothing.

One book. Seventy swaps. The whole house, sorted once.

Freya smiling confidently, swapping a black plastic cooking utensil for a wooden spoon
Black plasticWood

You've seen the videos. "Throw this out — it's toxic." And then… nothing. They never tell you what to use instead, so the pan stays in the drawer and the worry stays in your head.

This book is the part everyone skips. For every single thing worth removing, you get the exact replacement — the durable, old-fashioned version that lasts years instead of months — with where to get it and what it costs today. Kitchen, bathroom, laundry, living room.

Pick the swaps that fit your home and your budget. You don't have to do all seventy. Even a handful will change the air you breathe and the money you spend.

Exactly what this example assumes

These are illustrative budget inputs, not current store quotes or typical household spending. The four receipt lines group the six swaps below.

  • Plug-in freshener refills: Example budget: $24 per month × 12. After: no refills; no new equipment.
  • Liquid fabric softener: Example budget: $15 per month × 12. After: omit the optional softener.
  • Scented dryer sheets: Six $6 boxes per year. After: one $12 set of unscented dryer balls, included in full.
  • A shelf of cleaning sprays: Two $4 sprays each month × 12. After: $24 of plain-soap refills plus $6 for reusable cloths. Disinfection, when needed, is separate.
  • Fabric refresher sprays: Example budget: $20 per month × 12. After: no refresher spray; use the existing laundry routine.
  • Fragranced body wash: Six $10 bottles per year. After: six $6 bottles of a mild fragrance-free cleanser of equivalent size.

The arithmetic: $900 − $78 = $822 in first-year spending avoided. Less the $17.99 manual = $804.01. The three no-cost changes total $708 a year, or $59 a month, if those are purchases you would otherwise make.

The 02-week example: with a 30-day month, $59 × 14 ÷ 30 = $27.53 of spending avoided — more than the $17.99 manual. This is a prorated illustration; actual payback depends on your purchases and their timing.

Routine laundry and utilities are assumed unchanged. Taxes, shipping, extra washing, optional equipment and medical costs are excluded. Future savings depend on your routine and replacements.

Why the health labels are here

The labels flag an exposure concern or a sensitive group, not a promise to prevent illness. Ingredients differ between products. EPA identifies fragrance as a potential trigger for some sensitive people; AAD recommends fragrance-free care for eczema-prone skin.

For pregnancy and young children, food-contact materials are another place to look. BPA and certain phthalates can interfere with hormone signalling. Not all plastics contain these chemicals; the material and how you use it matter. The manual includes glass and stainless-steel swaps.

Soap and water suit many routine cleaning jobs. Disinfect when someone is sick or at higher risk, following the product label and CDC advice. Never mix cleaning products.

These are the things most homes keep on autopilot. Here's a taste of what the book replaces them with:

Swap even a handful of these and you'll usually spend less over a year than you did re-buying the disposables. The book pays for itself the first time you stop re-buying.

The deal this book makes with you.

I'm not here to scare you into anything.

When the scary version is overblown,

I say so — instead of frightening you into a purchase.

When the "natural" swap is actually worse, or costs more,

I tell you to keep what you've got.

When a replacement isn't worth it for your home,

I tell you to skip it. Not all seventy are for everyone.

Where the concern is real, I'll show you why. Where it isn't, I'll tell you that too — so every decision is yours, made with the facts, not the fear.

The first people through it.

Moving from Stockholm to the States was a total shock in the cleaning and cookware aisles—the ingredient lists here are endless. I thought living in the Nordics meant our home was already clean and low-tox. I had a pen out by chapter two, and the kitchen detox section alone was worth ten times the price of the book. The kitchen detox section alone brought back that Nordic simplicity and saved me from buying dozens of useless "green" products.

When I relocated to the US from Denmark, shopping for a safe home felt like a minefield, especially with my pregnant daughter-in-law and toddler grandkids visiting constantly. What got me is how she cuts right through American greenwashing. Her vetted swap lists brought that honest Nordic standard right into my new home with zero guesswork.

Kirsten B., 56 · early reader

No fluff, no panic. Moving to the US meant leaving strict EU safety standards behind, and caring for my elderly mother here made me hyper-aware of indoor toxins and cookware coatings. These realistic swap lists show you exactly what to prioritize without throwing away your entire kitchen. I’ve already overhauled our pantry and cleaning cabinet.

Freya.

I'm not a guru, and I'm not selling you a scare. I just got curious about what's actually inside the ordinary things in my home — the pan, the plug-in, the plastic tub — and once I saw it, I couldn't put it down.

So I did what my grandmother would have done. I cleared it out, one shelf at a time, and went back to cast iron, glass, vinegar, and an open window. This book is everything I'd tell you across the kitchen table — what's worth removing, why, and the simple thing to use instead.

Is this a physical book?

No — an instant PDF you download right after checkout and keep forever. Read it on any device, or print the checklists.

Are you making health claims?

The book points to what's actually in these products — PFAS, phthalates, VOCs — and why so many people are switching away from them. It's here to help you decide, not to replace your own doctor. Where the evidence is uncertain, the book says so.

Do I have to do all 70?

No. Start with one room, one shelf. Even a handful pays the book back.

Won't switching cost me a fortune?

Most swaps cost less over a year than re-buying the disposables, and many use things you already own. Every swap has a budget version.

What if it's not for me?

Seven-day refund, no questions.

Stop re-buying the things your grandmother never needed.

Seventy simple swaps. One honest book. $17.99, once.
